This is serious, so don't start reading unless you want to listen...Ok, i really enjoy my sociology class. It brings up a lot of issues that make you think, issue that most people had never thought of before. Well that has never happened to me, I had always previously thought of the topics and ideas at one point or another...until Friday. So if i never thought of it, most people probably havent either....We were discussing wealth, poverty, social structure...we got to the topic of "blaming the victim," I am sure everyone has heard of this before... you hear it most often in the case of homeless people. They are blamed for there situation when truthfully society makes it extremely difficult for an individual to rise up from that kind of a poverty alone. I had thought of this before as I am sure most people have, but then she talked about another group that has been for years now "blamed" for being a victim.
How many times have you heard posters or health teachers or tv say..."ladies, to protect yourself from becoming a victim of rape, you need to walk with a buddy, never go out late at night, never go in dangerous areas alone, never go to a party where you dont know people, never put down your drink at a party, never...never...never..." WAIT! Why dont guys ever get a lecture on rape...why dont they make men more aware...why dont they address the really issue here? If you really think about it for a minute...it seems like they are caring about the women population, but in reality they are blaming US for being victims!! Even if you did all those things you can still get raped...even if you messed up on one of those things, you NEVER deserve to get raped...There is NOTHING that justifies a women being violated. And yet when women are raped the first thing that crosses their minds is "what did I do wrong?" she immediately blames herself..."i should have known better, i should have seen it coming, i shouldnt have gone there, i knew it was dangerous..." WAIT! You cant blame yourself because doing or not doing something doesnt mean you were asking for it!! And yet society has brainwashed us to feel like we have done something wrong...society blames us for being a victim of rape...This in turn, causes few women to report a rape to the police b/c they dont want to feel stupid for not following the "guidelines" or be told they made bad choices. Society isnt trying to protect women, they arent trying to make them aware, they arent trying to solve the REAL issue, they are telling us to fix it ourselves and if we screw up, well...we should of payed attention to those ads...they warned us!!!
